Religious Racism

The world has profusely bled and dwindled into backwardness all in order to sit on the roundtable of superiority. High affinity for being the most unique is a game to the detriment of the entire human race. Racism, is the bold thief and robber which has entered into our midst to divide our peace.

According to Wikipedia,

Racism is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity.

Racism has obviously caused more atrocities than we ever can think of. However, the religious community continues to see this same racism plunder its peace and focus. Religious racism has to do with the various religious sects jostling each other to the point of hate, rejection and insults because of the difference in belief systems.

Religious racism has to do with the various religious sects jostling each other to the point of hate, rejection and insults because of the difference in belief systems.

In time past it was a battle between Catholics and Pagans but now it has become a war between: Protestants and Catholics, Orthodox churches and Charismatic churches, Charismatic churches and Pentecostal movement, Jehovah Witnesses and Christians, churches that have their women cover their hair and those that do not, Islam and Christians, those who use anointing oils and other relics opposed to those who forbid these things, religions that walk barefooted and those who do not…….etc. The list goes on and on.

Because of a person’s religious affiliation he or she faces discrimination and rejection. Parents advice their young children to stay away from other kids of different religious backgrounds. Now racism has become our priority mode of socialization. We deliberately teach it to our kids and followers boldly. This is killing society!

I once listened to a very unpleasant preaching from a so-called evangelist. All that he was preaching was directed towards a certain prophet, antagonizing and raining curses on him. I almost thought he was a terrible person until a few days later I saw the prophet (who was verbally attacked by this evangelist) also attacking orthodox churches because a leader of an orthodox church spoke against some charismatic churches particularly “one-man churches”.

It’s a whole web of racism and a bid for being better than another. In fact the orthodox is not different from the charismatic or pentecostals. Just as the orthodox sell foodstuffs, bottled waters, clothes and etc all in the name of “appeal and harvest” to generate funds, the others, likewise use “seed sowing” to generate money. We are all involved in same practice with different methods, so why revolt against another?

To feel superior isn’t a right, neither is it an achievement. This feeling is a dent which steamrolls humanity into obvious destruction.

Neighbours are at loggerheads because they attend different churches or because they’re affiliated with one religion or the other. I think we, the religious, should know what’s best. We should work assiduously to foster a harmonious community.

Community development should be a priority instead of scrambling for superiority as to who came first and who did what and who ate what…
Finally, let’s not make our church names and doctrines define us. Love and respect for humanity should be cherished by every single person no matter the religion or belief system.

For we will not make comparison of ourselves with some of those who say good things about themselves: but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and making comparison of themselves with themselves, are not wise. (2 Corinthians 10:13, BBE)

  1. You have said it all. Good insight into religious racism. I would love to know your opinion on this topic.

“Could religion be a tool of distraction and destruction introduced to Africans by our colonial masters?”

    My Opinion

I am beginning to believe that religion was used to control Africans and it is causing us more damage including Religious racism which you have touched on. Almost all our colonial masters have abandoned most parts of Religion while we continually use religion to create divisions amongst us.Isnt it time we abandoned it too? Besides it was introduced to us by them during slavery. We are better off with our own religion at least if we want to be Religious than believe in our slave masters.

  2. My take on the topic “Could religion be a tool of distraction and destruction introduced to Africans by our colonial masters?” is simply this;
It could be and/or it could be not, because I don’t know the intentions of colonial masters but however the case is, religion has greater advantages. Instead of focusing on methods used to present religion especially Christianity to Africans which was indubitably cruel, we should rather focus our energies on making progress with what is rational and beneficial.
